Zoanthid identification is easiest when you compare several visible traits instead of relying on one color alone. Look at the dominant color across the face of the polyp, secondary colors, rings, the skirt around the outside, mouth color, markings and overall polyp size. Two zoas can share one or two colors while still being completely different strains.
Aquarium lighting can also change how a zoa appears. Blue-heavy reef lighting may intensify fluorescent colors, while whiter lighting can make other markings easier to see.
