Sun Coral (Tubastraea spp.)
Lighting Requirements: Low to Moderate
Water Flow: Low to Medium
Care Level: Moderate
Placement: Middle to Lower Levels
Temperament: Peaceful
Sun Coral (Tubastraea spp.) is a stunning, non-photosynthetic LPS coral known for its bright, orange, black or yellow polyps that resemble the rays of the sun. Unlike most corals, Sun Corals do not rely on symbiotic zooxanthellae for energy; instead, they feed on plankton and other small foods. This unique feeding behavior makes them a favorite among advanced hobbyists who are comfortable with supplemental feeding but want a coral that adds vivid color and texture to the reef.
Sun Corals thrive under low to moderate lighting and low to medium water flow. Since they do not rely on light for energy, they can be placed in areas with less light exposure, allowing for more flexibility in placement. Regular feeding is essential for their survival, and they can be fed a variety of foods such as small plankton, brine shrimp, or specialized coral foods. Without proper feeding, Sun Corals may not thrive or could shrink over time.
This coral is peaceful and does not exhibit aggressive behavior towards other corals. However, due to its feeding needs, it requires careful attention to ensure that it receives enough nutrients. Sun Corals should be placed in a stable location on the substrate where they can fully extend their polyps and capture food.
